About us
This is the new website of Servizio Glaciologico Lombardo (Glaciological Service of Lombardy, hereafter SGL) where the visitor is able to simulate exciting visits to the Lombard Glaciers. As a matter of fact, our Region, though reaching 4000 m of altitude only at Piz Bernina, has a wealth of glaciers and is the site of the two largest Italian apparatuses: the first one is the Adamello Glacier while the second one, the Forni Glacier, is the largest Italian valley glacier. As a whole, Lombardy numbers 276 ice bodies (both glaciers and glacierets) and 135 minor glacial features; the total surface covered by ice is estimated to be 10,500 hectares (2007). This natural patrimony, very important both for human and hydro-electric uses, is monitored by the volunteers of Servizio Glaciologico Lombardo through different approaches, some of which extremely innovative.

In brief, the website holds data from scientific literature, results of monthly nivo-meteorological surveys, the most complete, digitalized photographic archive of Lombardy’s Glaciers and many articles about glaciology, nivology, meteorology, climatology and climate history. It is also a useful tool for SGL operators for their annual field surveys and monographic researches. Finally, SGL website offers photographic reports of expeditions and researches about other glaciers of the Earth.
